Christopher is one of the best novels I have read - ever! Dale Ahlquist proclaims the novel as a marvel; however, it is difficult to describe a marvel, wonder, or the mystery of Lake Superior. But as the name implies in the latter, the novel is just that: superior - an instant classic. One could compare Christopher to a Nicholas Sparks novel mixed with the humor of coming of age stories such as "Flipped" or"Little Manhattan" mixed with adventure and humor similar to "The Princess Bride". But this is only a glimpse of the texture of the novel, not the adventure and quest you will find yourself on and in. Some may find life mundane, repetitious, and a bore; perhaps that is because they have not come face to face with a mountain lion or been on a quest with Christopher. Delightful, filled with well crafted prose, and thrilling adventure. Do not miss out on this story - a wonderful read. I rate it five stars plus a few more! MAD

This book was good but not great. It was a decent escape and interesting storyline. It reminded me of Michael O'Brien's books but definitely not as well written. I found the development of the characters to be choppy at times. Anyways I would say read the book it's not bad and it did keep my interest but I found that there was something missing.
This book is mainly written for the teen market. However, there was an underlying theme that was fully revealed at the end. I am glad that I read this book, it taught me a new lesson about my Catholic faith.
Wasn't sure what to expect from this book since the person who referred this book to me has very different tastes in writing than myself. i should also say that I am a difficult reader to please since few books grab my interest. That said, this book does it all. It has everything - swift, grabbing story, interesting and purposeful characters with multiple dimensions, symbolism and flat out humor. Best of all, everything about this book understands the human condition and ultimately pleases the readers soul.
Dave Athey's Christopher reads like a song. I found myself placing colored stickers on every other page to refer back to the imagery he caroled into certain sentences. Each sticker in my copy marks a place in the book where poetry and prose collide in perfect harmony. "...Chris witnessed clouds that turned blood-red, gorged with sunset like some grand catastrophe of grace." (p.98). The main character is a believable, awkward, gentle youth on a quest to understand himself and his faith. I recalled my own faith journey and spiritual awakening through the eyes of this young hero.
Saint Augustine said, "You have made us for yourself, Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You." It is a catholic (universal) truth that we are all seeking God. If we don't seek to satisfy that innate restlessness with Him, we will constantly be choosing superficial substitutions. This novel is the story of young Christopher who is in search of truth and ultimate meaning. Even at a young age, Christopher has the ability to see the presence of the holy in the natural world, yet he does not know God fully. Still, his mystical heart continues to search for true love which he must be prepared to give himself to unconditionally.

Christopher is an engaging novel that communicates the beauty and love of God. Through unique characters we see that the journey to know Him includes brokenness, loneliness and despair. It is a difficult road, but it is the only one that ultimately brings true, pure and everlasting joy.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Christopher, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a book that inspires, engages, and moves the reader. The language is stunning as Christopher Lagorio makes his way through love, faith, and life, stumbling across captivating characters as he goes. On one level the book is simple, funny, and charming; but on a deeper level, it instructs and challenges. I felt as if I grew up with the young knight, Christopher, and watched as he made, lost, and found friends. Athey has created lively, human characters that embody the pleasures and pains we all face.

This novel is a joy to read, and I found that it works perfectly in a book club or discussion group setting. As president of a small book club made up of mostly English students and some professors, I chose Christopher for our April novel. When we met to discuss the text, it was clear that it connected to each member on a very individual level. It stimulated in depth discussion and prompted meaningful questions for everyone. Many of Athey's masterful moves as a writer are not apparent on the first read; and as we reread and discussed various excerpts of the novel, it became clear that its literary worth is striking.

In short, I would recommend this novel for many reasons. It was a joy to read, and I know that I will be rereading it soon. I also suggest Christopher as a group read since it will strike each reader differently. Christopher is a memorable novel that leaves a lasting impression.
Novalis said that though live is not a dream it might and perhaps ought become one. Certainly there are many dreams in our literature. The immense Grail cycle of the 12th century onwards is ,at least, a dream about the meaning of the bread and wine of communion. And David Athey's new novel Christopher is a dream of a life which becomes a grail quest. It has the authority which can only derive from the author being himself a seeker and a finder and anew a seeker, something one does not feel immediately with all religious books. An earlier book of poems by Athey is titled 'Hunting and Gathering Heaven' and this is what this author does in all his work and, of his work so far, culminating here. One could say 'put it on the shelf beside Walker Percy's Lancelot'-- but in any case put it on the shelf! It is a dreamed life which comes to a good place... a here and now where what might have been and what was join in the author's and the reader's present moment standing before the truth of dream and life.
