Wow! After A Cast of Stones, I couldn't help but immediately grab this sequel.

Errol Stone, having just rising to an elevated status, is suddenly hurled into another tangled web of church politics. Falsely accused, he is forced to take dangerous roads to find the villain, Sarin Valon, and kill him. But such a task is a lot more difficult than he realized.

At the same time, Luis and Martin are sent to Errol's birthplace to learn the mystery of his identity. Instead, they stumble upon another: the mysterious power of Aurae, the supposed "unknowable" Spirit of Deas. What they will learn will shatter everything they were led and taught to believe, including their views on Deas and His ways.

From mysterious "shadow lands", across the seas, to desert cities, full of deceit, shocking twists, prophecies, and forces of light and darkness, Errol and his friends will embark on a journey that will lead them to a discovery of the true nature of Deas, and the continuing fate of the kingdom of Illustra... and the known world.

Patrick W. Carr never disappoints in this unforgettable series. Each character reveals in-depth struggles, weaknesses, and hidden strengths. The marvel-- and terrors-- of their world revealed through their eyes. Mysteries upon another mystery... full of shocking twists and revelations! And the ending... will leave you craving for the final book!

Beautifully done! I highly recommend it for teens and young adults!

The Hero Lot The Staff and the Sword Patrick W Carr 9780764210440 Books Reviews

The Hero's Lot is the second book in Patrick Carr's The Staff and the Sword series and it was just as great as the first! Carr is a new and refreshing voice in fantasy and I can't wait to get my hands on the conclusion to this fantastic series.

The story picks up right where we left off in A Cast of Stones. Errol, now Earl Stone, is trying to find is place in Erinon and the church he doesn't fully trust. The traitor Sarin Valon has fled to Merakh and left chaos and suspicion in his wake. There is word of ferrals throughout the kingdom and the king is growing ever closer to his heirless end. Plans go amok and Errol is placed under compulsion to track down and kill Valon while Luis, Martin and Cruk and sent back to Callowford to discover Errol's importance.

I'm happy to say that The Hero's Lot did not suffer from middle book syndrome and was a page turner to the end. Errol continues to grow as a character and is supported by a wonderful supporting cast. I was delighted to see a few favorite characters from the first book make their returns as well. The story doesn't just rely on its action either, there is a healthy bit of mystery included that promises to carry through to the end of the series. My only issue was the romance between Errol and Adora. It seemed to have come out of nowhere and I feel like a little build up would have made it more believable.

I would recommend this series to any fantast fan and am eagerly awaiting A Draw of Kings.

*I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.*
This is the sequel, and it is just as good as the first one. It has taken me a long time to get this review in a) because we moved right after I got it, and b) I read the first one with my husband before I got this one and he insisted on reading it with me. I easily get sucked into just about every book I read (as long as it is clean), but my husband is a little more picky about what he will spend his time reading, so if my stating this as an awesome book doesn't mean much to you, maybe it will mean more coming from my husband. He keeps asking me when the next book is coming out (February 4, 2014 just in case anyone else is wondering.) I can't say enough about this book. It has excellent character development, lots of action, a little romance, and leaves you just wanting to know what is going to happen next. The main character, Errol, is totally an underdog from the begining of the first book, but he makes changes that are not easy but are necessary. In the first book he starts out as the town drunk, but by the end he has saved the kingdom and mastered the staff. In the second book, he is unjustly forced into doing something that he doesn't expect to survive from. I like books, but its not often you find the caliber that is in this authors writing. I will be reading the next book when it comes out! I just wish I didn't have to wait.

I recieved this book from Bethany House Publishing for free in return for my honest opinion.
What a great sequel. Hero's Lot is book two of the "Staff and the Sword" Christian Fantasy Trilogy. So far I am very much enjoying these books. Some of it mirrors our own Church history, but most of it is pure fantasy. The main character is so real, flaws and all. All of the characters are well rounded and make you feel like you know them personally. I have laughed and cried, gotten angry and sad, but always had a hard time putting them down. Worth the money to buy them, or find them at the local library. Book one is offered free, version on , book two is 5.99 and three is 9.99. I downloaded the free one, couldn't find book two at the library, so purchased it, now I am borrowing book three! Will be checking out more from this author, be forewarned this is not a light read! It will take some time and some emotional toll. I give it five stars! No swearing or sexual content, there is fighting and violence. I can recommend for teens and up.
