Truffles and Troubles: Book 1 in The Chocolate...is about Mac (Catharine) and her friend Brie (Sabrina) who have been friends since childhood. Mac is from a well to do family (her grandfather was the mayor) and Brie was from the working class. But together, when Mac came home from Harvard, her and Brie opened a Chocolate Cafe that was doing quite well. Brie made the chocolate and Mac served the people etc. in the cafe. Mac wasn't the only one from a well to do family. Cameron also grew up with Mac and Brie and comes from a rich family, but is very different from Mac. Cameron doesn't want to work or do anything except receive and spend his family's money. His mother owns a lot of real estate in the area and isn't too well liked. Even though his mother would collect the rent from her renters, she was described as being judgmental about Cameron's friend (Mark) that he brought home, being a socialite, and yet, feeble. When she met Cameron's friend, she could hardly pour the lemonade etc. Her fiance seemed to be in charge of getting things done. While all of this is taking place, Mac meets the new town's Detective Mr. Stocker, as she is taking a run on the beach. Their first meeting with each other didn't go well at all. Mac had a hangover from the night before and he was smoking a cigarette which made her get sick on the beach. Not too good, if you want to make a good impression on someone. The story is slow at first but after Cameron's mother and fiance get killed, the pace picks up and is a quick read. Will Mac along with Brie and the Detective solve the murder? Will Mac survive while uncovering bits of information about who might have done the crime? The characters are likeable and I would read another story from this series.

Rich and beautiful Catherine Mackenzie and cutie girlfriend, Sabrina (Brie) solve the murder of Makenzie Bay founding family member and Mayor. OK. Pleasant. Little romance. No extended violence.
Truffles and Troubles was out of this world! I went in blind, didn't even read the description and everything about it was just awesome!
Mac and Brie were brilliant together with the perfect amount silly cozy fun with room leftover for all that snark and sass!
I have highlights of funny quotes all through the story and I NEVER do that but I just had to keep them referenced somewhere.
Valley did an outstanding job on this debut novel and honestly, I cannot believe this is her first book. Her character development, storyline, and, witty conversation are a great addition to the cozy world. I felt like I was at home chatting with my crazy friend the whole time I was reading!!!
There is definitely a special edge to her writing that makes this cozy something different, sure to be enjoyed by a variety of readers!
Truffles and Troubles was hilarious, a modern read and a sure fire hit in my eyes.. Already begging for the next one!
Interesting plot. of course murder and romance mixed together ,Mac, she just has to get involved and try to solve the murder putting herself in danger! All got solved and romance blooms with Mac and Louis. Hope too see another book in this new series.
This book is a really fast light read. Perfect for a bus ride or Dr. visit. There is a little fun, a little mystery, a little romance - but nothing heavy. I really didn't understand the character breaking into suspect's homes with no repercussions, but other than that it was a straight forward feminine based crime solver.
It was an OK cozy mystery. Really nothing special. It didn't leave me wanting more. There were no recipes as well, as is common in food related cozy mystery. The upside. - it was a nice clean story.
Difficult to follow for a start. You'd think there would be a more tasteful way for the main character to "meet" a possible love interest. It was just gross. The fact that the two friends led someone to believe she was liked, invited her out for an evening just to secure information, and laughed at what she said was just hard to digest she was never to be heard from again in the story. Let's hope the next one is better as I already made that purchase. That part had "mean girls" written all over it! Live and learn!
Mac and Sabrina own a shop in Mackenzie Bay where Sabrina creates decadent chocolate creations in her upstairs lab and Mac runs the downstairs retail business. When their landlady, Victoria Dunleavy is found shot to death, Mac as a criminology major, pushes herself into the investigation. Mac and Victoria are both descendants of founding families and polite enemies. Victoria's son is cleared as a suspect but Mac finds another suspect. Detective Louis Stocker, a recent import from England tries to keep Mac out of trouble but finds it a hard job. Mac and Sabrina keep looking and Mac soon finds herself face to face with the killer. The writing is concise and the story moves quickly. The characters are nicely done but leave room for lots more development. The descriptions of the chocolate will have you drooling and running to get some. This is a slightly edgier cozy with a twisted murder plot. I am reading the second book to see what Mac and Sabrina get into next.
